Curriculum vitae of eng. Giovanni Palmisano
Giovanni Palmisano was born in Palermo on 9th February 1981. On 12th July 1999 he got the high school degree at the Gymnasium “G. Garibaldi” of Palermo with the votation of 100/100 and in the same year he began his studies in Chemical Engineering (specialization: processes) at University of Palermo. He got the high degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Palermo on 20th April 2005 (5-year course, 110/110 cum laude), reporting about an experimental thesis on “Photocatalytic degradation of cyanobenzene in TiO2 aqueous suspensions: kinetics and mechanism of its complete oxidation”.
He is able to speak and to write a good English and he also has a sufficient knowledge of written and oral German (he obtained the international certificate “Deutsch als Fremdsprache” from Goethe Institut after written and oral examinations). Moreover he has a basic knowledge of written and oral Spanish.
During his experimental thesis he has modelled and assembled liquid-solid and gas-solid photocatalytic reactors with various configurations. Moreover he has a good practice in analytical Chemistry (total organic carbon, gas and liquid chromatography, ionic chromatography, UV-Vis spectrophotometric analyses etc.). He also has some experience on sol-gel preparation of nanostructured TiO2 catalysts and photocatalysts as thin films using dip-coating and spin-coating technologies.
Since April 2005 he continued his studies at the Department of Chemical Engineering also informally collaborating with dr. Mario Pagliaro (Nanostructured Materials Institute - National Research Council - Section of Palermo). The research activities were aimed to generalize the reaction mechanism of hydroxylation of aromatic compounds during their partial photocatalytic oxidation in order to extend the current knowledge on hydroxyl radical oxidation mechanism in heterogeneous photocatalysis.
On 12th September 2005 he got a three months research grant on “Sol-gel electrocatalysts for selective oxidations” (BANDO N. ISMN-PA/0001/2005) to work at the Nanostructured Materials Institute - National Research Council - Section of Palermo, under the tutorage of dr. Mario Pagliaro. In particular he studied electrocatalytic oxidation, mediated by TEMPO free radical, in homogenous phase and over functionalised ORMOSIL (organically modified silicates) electrodes. He also worked for the deposition and the study of mechanical properties of ORMOSIL films obtained by spin-coating.
On 23rd September 2005 he passed the exams for the exercise of engineer profession and since March 2006 he is member of the board of engineers of Palermo province.
Since 1st January 2006 until 31st December 2008 he was Ph.D. student (“Chemical and Materials Engineering”) at the Department of Chemical Engineering of University of Palermo with the tutorage of prof. eng. Vincenzo Augugliaro and the co-tutorage of dr. Mario Pagliaro (Ph.D. thesis titled “Novel selective redox processes by using heterogeneous photocatalysis and electrochemistry: preparation and characterization of new materials and development of reaction systems”).
From September 2006 until March 2007 he worked at Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid - CSIC (tutor: Ph.D. Maria Luisa Ferrer Pla) for a Ph.D. stay of seven months. The research activities, carried out in the “Bio-inspired materials” group, included the preparation of (i) metals and (ii) films doped with photoactive species and (iii) catalysts for selective enzymatic oxidation reactions, mediated by TEMPO radical and laccase.
Since March 2008 he is consultant for the development of new industrial activities related to new generation photovoltaic products and to self-cleaning photocatalytic products.
In 2008 he contributed to the organization of the “5th European meeting on solar chemistry and photocatalysis: environmental applications" (SPEA5), that took place in Palermo in October 4-8 2008, at “Splendid Hotel La Torre of Mondello”.
Since January 15 2009 he is research fellow at the Department of Electronic Engineering of Rome “Tor Vergata” University, under the tutorage of prof. Aldo Di Carlo. His research program deals with the identification of a low-temperature process for the preparation of mesoporous TiO2 layers to be used in DSC (dye-sensitized solar cells).
Since February 2009 he teaches in ISES (International Solar Energy Society) courses on photovoltaics. On 16th March 2009 he passes the final PhD exam and got the doctor of philosophy title in “Chemical and Materials Engineering” at the University of Palermo. Since April 2009 he teaches at “Solar Master”, master on photovoltaics organised by Sicily’s Photovoltaic Research Pole. In 2009 he contributed to the organization of the international meeting FIGIPAS 10th in Inorganic Chemistry, that took place in Palermo in July 1-4 2009, at “Villa Igiea” Hilton Hotel.
Since April 2006 he is member of the “Royal Society of Chemistry”. In April 18th 2007 he was appointed “Cultore della materia” in the subject of “Principi di Ingegneria Chimica” (SSD: ING-IND 24) and later on he has performed didactical practice in the course of “Chemical Reactors”, held by prof. eng. Vincenzo Augugliaro. Since May 2009 he is member of “ISES Italia” (International Solar Energy Society).
